Settling In
Hatchlings Settling In Process
Nest Nursery Settling in Policy September 2022.docx
You will be contacted by Miriam or Robyn to arrange settling in sessions. We usually suggest a minimum of 3 staggered sessions to get your baby used to their new environment, the staff and their key person. These sessions are planned generally 1-2 weeks before your child is due to start nursery. You will complete an ‘All About Me’ All About Me Hatchlings or All About Me - Owls
To help your child settle in we make a Family Book / Poster with them (or for them depending on the age of the child). We will ask you to send in photos before your child arrives for their first settle so we can make these in the room together.

Health & Safety
We may ask you to bring in your child’s red health book and sign additional forms if your child has any specific health needs or requirements. If you are eligible for funding, you will complete a declaration form and provide your child’s birth certificate or passport. You can find details at www.childcare choices.gov.uk. You will be sent the link to complete all your child’s detailed information. You will be sent the link to complete all your child’s detailed information. Our Ethos
We offer a nurturing environment, taking time to settle in children at their pace, sharing with parents the culture of the setting. We offer plenty of opportunities for parents and families to give us their ideas and thoughts about what we are doing, day to day and week to week, in particular celebrating cultural experiences and religious events throughout the year. Nest Nursery Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy September 2022.docx Stonewall Celebrating Difference in the EYFS.pdf
Children have a curious and inquisitive nature, we aim to offer an environment that safely enables them to observe, experiment, explore, learn and develop their skills and abilities to become independent. We believe that by ‘getting to know you’ we can plan appropriate activities to ‘make a difference’
We often ask ourselves ‘what is it like to be here?’ from the child’s perspective and encourage older children to tell us about their likes and preferences at nursery. Our curriculum is rich and diverse, reflecting all children at Nest Nursery. Nest Ethos & Curriculum.docx - Google Docs.pdf Nest - Curiosity Approach .docx - Google Docs.pdf
By understanding the children in our care, we can identify our strengths and work on developing these.
We facilitate, encourage and support children to learn important daily and social skills, these include setting up tables, washing hands, eating, emptying and cleaning plates, putting on their clothes, tidying up their toys, making friends, being kind and polite to each other.
We encourage children to use their own cups and cutlery to help them develop physical dexterity and motor skills.
Our nursery is text rich and has lots of visual reminders, including children’s artwork and photos displayed at their level. We have a book loan scheme for Elderberries and are part of the book start scheme.

Emotion Coaching
At Nest Nursery we practise Emotion Coaching, which was first introduced by John Gottman and his colleagues in the USA. Emotion coaching is about helping children to become more aware of their emotions and to manage their own feelings particularly during instances of misbehaviour.
Co regulation and Self Regulation
We believe Co regulation and Self regulation are important processes for a child to learn. We implement these where possible at Nest Nursery.
Invitations To Learn
Our curriculum supports children by providing ‘Invitations to Learn’ that are rich and ambitious and carefully designed taking into consideration our knowledge of our key children, the parents feedback, the breadth and depth of our children's needs whether they have any disabilities or a more challenging environment and that feels inclusive and accessible to all children irrespective of their background or upbringing.
Our continuous plan ensures a broad, rich curriculum which is tailored and considers each child's needs and wellbeing.
Modelling language
At Nest Nursery we believe in Modeling Language for the child. This involves correctly repeating what a child says.
For example:
Child. “I got doggy”
Adult “Yes, you have got a dog.”
We also look at all opportunities to teach children new words and provide words for the activity that children are taking part in, this is called Narrating Play.
For example: Child is intently looking at the bicycle tyre on the fence in the garden as he spins it round, and the adult says “Oh, you’re making the wheel spin round and round.”

Makaton
Makaton is useful to any non-verbal child as it supports them to communicate. Very young babies can be taught to sign. It can also support children with EAL who are not necessarily non-verbal, they are just learning to speak English. Every week we send a new Makaton sign out to all Parents on our Famly News Feed for parents to practise at home with their child.

Our Family Wall
We have Family Wall’s at Nest Nursery with photographs of the children with their families. These are simply a way for the children to be reminded of their families during the day, to talk about them and hopefully to comfort them.

Children's Surveys
We conduct Children’s Survey’s in our Elderberries Room as it is a wonderful technique to find out what the children think about our nursery.
The children’s Key Person will sit their Key child and ask them a set of questions based on the Effective Early Learning Programme which is a programme of self-evaluation for Nursery settings. The answers can be very insightful and useful to help improve aspects of the Nursery.

Dough disco
Dough Discos is a technique for improving listening and attention as well as fine motor skills. During circle times each child has a ball of dough. We sing a song as the children manipulate the dough according to the instructions in the song, such as, pinch, squeeze, roll etc.

Special Books
Special Books are a way of celebrating the child’s journey. The child will work closely with their key person to put their special pieces of work in. When the work is carried out your child’s key person will note what your child said about their piece of work, when putting the Special Books together your child’s key person will invite the child to reflect on their learning and this is written down as well. This also enables children to see their own development.

Promoting British Values
Under the Prevent Duty we are required “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation to promote the fundamental British Values”. We are required to be alert to people being drawn into radicalism. Protecting children from the risk of radicalisation is seen as part of the nursery’s wider safeguarding duties and is similar in nature to protecting children from other forms of harm and abuse. How we demonstrate that we promote British Values in our early years setting

Festivals and celebrations
We observe all Festivals and Celebrations at our Nursery. We believe by doing this it helps the children become closer to each other’s traditions and cultural beliefs and develop respect and understanding for each other’s customs and traditions.

Planning and provision
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage
Our day to day practice contains elements of the Curiosity Approach which is an amalgam of many tried and tested learning approaches such as the Rudolph Steiner approach and the Montessori Approach. Every day we offer opportunities for children to run, climb and explore the natural world.

BASELINE ASSESMENTS
You shall be given this form to complete during your settling in along with the All About Me Form. Once completed, these are uploaded to your child’s journey on the Famly App. This gives us a clear picture of where your child is developmentally and enables us to support their transition to nursery and future learning at their correct pace and stage which is unique to each child.

What is a Focus Cycle, and what does this mean?
The focus cycle ensures that the key person has 1-1 time with each of their children, to understand whether the curriculum provided is challenging, stimulating and suitable for their needs.
Your child will be a focus child for 1 week on each cycle.
The cycle of your child becoming a Focus shall be every 6 weeks for Hatchlings
The cycle of your child becoming a Focus shall be every 12 weeks for Owls
Focus Cycle Doc

The Role of the Keyperson at Nest Nursery
The key person is responsible for welcoming the child and parent(s) and settling the child into nursery. They are the main point of contact for parents. However, all staff should support and record all children’s development and learning whenever the opportunity arises, it should be logged on Famly by whomever carries out the observation.
All children will have a key person and a focus period
apart from the following:
- apart from the following:
- Children who attend for one full day a week
- Children for whom Nest is a secondary setting
*Children who are in the above category - your room leader shall be your lead person.

Outings & Events
We take the children on visits to local places of interest as well as regular use of the play park nearby. We have a ratio of 1 adult to 2 children when we leave the nursery.

Parents Meetings
If you would like to arrange a meeting at any time, please email [email protected] to make an appointment. We invite you to meet the staff every April and October.

TWILIGHT SESSIONS
In normal circumstances we have biannual ‘twilight’ sessions about a specific topic. These evenings take place at the nursery from 6-7. Refreshments are provided, and children are welcome to stay and play. You can meet the staff and other parents.

Rules and expectations
Golden Rules Poster
Concerns of any nature are recorded and monitored as part of our quality assurance programme. Children will learn to follow our simple code of conduct at nursery. We will encourage children to be kind and gentle to each other. See our behaviour plan here: Behaviour Management 2023.docx No verbal or physical abuse towards staff will be tolerated at any time.

Safety & Security
Please allocate a password to nominated persons collecting your child. We will not allow your child to be collected by any person who is not ‘nominated’ and/or does not have the password.
Daily risk assessments are carried out to ensure the nursery is safe. We regularly conduct fire drills and evaluate our evacuation procedures.
All staff have a DBS check that has been carried out in the last 3 years. Most staff have enrolled to online checks which are updated if an offence occurs, we can check these online at any time.

Sickness, Illness and Common Infections
Children in group care will be exposed and you may find it takes a little time to build up their immunity from the common bugs and colds.
To keep infections to a minimum we have a little guidance for you.Health Protection Chart for Nest Nursery.docx

Medical Needs
Should your child have a specific medical condition or allergy you will be required to complete a Health Care Plan & discuss the details with the manager.
Medication MUST be prescribed and dated. We will only administer this when you have completed the medication log. You must sign this log at the end of the day.
Please DO NOT leave any foods or drinks in your child’s coat or bag as another child may have an allergy which you are unaware of.
Please be aware that Nest Nursery has a policy that children who have their vaccinations should be kept home from Nursery for 24 hours afterwards as they can react quite severely and need to be monitored.NHS What to expect after vaccinations.pdf

SUITABLE CLOTHING
Every room offers opportunities for the children to use their gross motor skills
We believe our greatest memories are made playing together, having lots of challenges, so lots of layers of clothing, hats, gloves and coats are essential in colder weather, wellies are essential for our Forest Garden area and sun hats in the warmer weather. We apply sun cream unless your child has sensitivity towards this in which case you can bring in your own product marked clearly with your child’s name.
What is Forest School? | Forest School Association
We ask for at least 3 sets of spare clothes to be left at nursery in a cloth bag of small backpack (No plastic bags).

Child Protection and Safeguarding
We follow strict guidelines in any case of suspected abuse. Parents would usually be informed if we have concerns unless we feared for the child’s safety.
Our Child Protection and Safeguarding Officer is Eileen Rumble. All our staff receive regular Safeguarding training, and updates.
Nest Nursery Safeguarding Policy.docx
Nest Nursery Safeguarding Children and Child Protection.docx

Behaviour Management
Positive praise and calm voices are key to ensuring desirable behaviour is encouraged. We avoid negative phrases so for example, ‘don’t shout’ can be rephrased as asking children to use their ‘inside voice.’ Older children help to create our Golden Rules which describe, for instance, using ‘kind hands, feet and words’ as well as encouraging children to respect and care for their nursery environment.
Nest Nursery Behaviour Management Policy September 2022.docx

Transferring Rooms
When a child is ready to move to another age group room you are contacted by your key person and a two week transition plan is created. You are invited to have a tour or your new room and given information about your child’s new Key Person, their working pattern, the new routine for the day and introduced to the team.
Our Room Routines for each room are:
Hatchlings Daily Routine
Owls Daily Routine

School Readiness
Children start school in the UK from the age of 4. Towards the end of April we start to prepare the children in Elderberries who will be going to school in September.School readiness at Nest Nursery
If you wish to send your child to Primary School in September 2023 you must apply via E-admissions by 15th January 2023
.https://www.haringey.gov.uk/children-and-families/schools-and-education/school-admissions/starting-primary-school

Sleep and Rest
Younger children have naps when needed. Children are supported to get to sleep by a familiar adult who remains nearby. Children may have a bottle/cup of milk, or a comforter, such as a blanket, soft toy or a dummy from home. Dummies can be dangerous if children run with them in their mouths and can restrict speech, therefore we will try to encourage children to leave them in a safe place until rest times.
Dummies, pros and cons: your dummy questions answered | NCT

Mealtimes
Our children have regular access to water and we encourage Elderberries and Sweet Peas children to serve themselves at their water stations. We offer baby led weaning and if your child needs a breast feed, we have created a lovely space where you can sit and feed your baby comfortably.
Here is a link to the local NCT Group.
https://www.nct.org.uk/courses-workshops/nct-antenatal-course
Mealtimes are relaxed and staff eat with the children, often discussing the food and its nutritional value. Children are offered fruit, which they self prepare and serve during both am and pm sessions as well as natural yoghurt. Elderberries and Sweet Peas children cook once a week. The children have a mud kitchen in the garden to pretend to cook food. During special occasions and cultural festivals, we ask you to share your food and suggestions. The children gain an appreciation of food if we share culturally diverse recipes and meals frequently.
Action4Children Eat Better Start Better Voluntary Food and Drink Guidelines.pdf
We encourage baby-led weaning with all children. We will of course help any child/baby who is having trouble feed themselves and make sure all food is cut up to the appropriate size to eliminate any choking hazards. Please note that we do not serve sausages or grapes or Blueberries at Nest Nursery due to the high risk of choking.
Choking Hazards Table.pdf

Pegs and bags
We maintain a ‘plastic bag free zone’. Please provide at least three full sets of spare clothing in a canvas bag or backpack. Any soiled clothing will be placed in a nappy sack and handed to you.
Please label all clothes to avoid misplacement of clothes.
We will send bags home at the end of each term to be topped up/changed according to the coming season.

Example of Curriculum
At Mara Nursery we follow the Curiosity Approach and Planning in the Moment.
Following is a brief description of each.
If you would like more information, please contact us by email: [email protected].
A Baseline assessment is completed with the parent after the child’s initial six weeks in the nursery. This entails a zoom meeting between the parent and the child’s key person.
Planning: children are planned for individually. Each child is ‘focused’ on regularly. Parents are invited to help us to decide on the child’s next steps of learning which are facilitated during the two-week focus period.
We carry out three types of observations which help us to support the focus child’s learning and development.
- Objective led planning - when we work with the child we will have the identified next step in mind. We follow the child’s interest to support their learning.
- Planning in the moment – this is when we notice an opportunity to support the child’s learning during their play, this may or may not be linked to their next step.
- Spontaneous observations – we notice something the child is doing that we wish to record but we do not feel it appropriate or necessary to intervene.
Information including observations and photographs are entered onto a Nursery software programme called Famly which parents have access to. Parents can also add their own photos and information.
Running alongside the work we do with the Focus Children we have pre-planned Continuous Provision. Each age group (room) has a personalised Continuous Provision plan. The Continuous Provision plan offers age-appropriate ideas for activities in selected areas of learning to ensure we are offering the children a broad, rich curriculum full of exciting provocations to play and learn.
Workshop style opportunities run alongside to facilitate independent learning. Continuous Provision is on a 6-weekly cycle, it is flexible and adapted to meet children’s needs and interests.
The Curiosity Approach
Curiosity is the very foundation of learning. It is what drives children in the early years to explore, do, and think for themselves. It is the key to fostering that curiosity lies in the way you set out your environment.
In a Curiosity Approach setting, you won’t find brightly coloured walls and hundreds of shiny plastic toys. Instead, you will see wooden materials, natural resources, and neutral backgrounds that allow the colour to shine. Of course, stimulation is key to developing little brains and building those connections that help them learn. But bright, busy and plastic provisions are not doing it in the right way. Plastic all smells the same and feels the same. On the other hand, if you are recycling and sourcing open-ended resources and natural materials you are bringing different elements, textures, feels and smells. A sense of curiosity and wonder will come with it.

Routines during the day
Our daily routines for the younger children are split into morning and afternoon sessions.
The morning sessions run from 8am until 12.30pm. The afternoon sessions run from 1.30pm until 6pm.
Older children follow "The Curiosity Approach" with Prime areas incorporated throughout the whole day: personal, social and emotional development, physical development and communication and language.
Trips and visits
Trips from the
nursery are pre-planned and we aim to give parents at least a
weeks’ notice. The ratio of children to staff is 2:1 regardless of
age so children tend to go for trips in smaller groups.
We welcome any suggestions for local trips and visits. Please request our trips and visits policy from the office.
Some examples of trips that we conduct include; going to the post office, going to the local shops, a trip to the park or to Brook Farm Open Space. All trips must be risk assessed prior to the children leaving the nursery. Staff are required to complete an observation on the trip to show the educational significance of their trip and why it was carried out.
